Lucy, this is an interesting shot. That crane looking thing looks out of place on top of the bluff. Do you know what it's for?

Thanks, AGMPRISMA, I'm glad you like the photo of Portland Bill.

Hello Chuck. There are no beaches at this point on the coast so boats have to be lowered over the cliff, directly into the sea. That's what the crane is for.

Incidentally, I left quite a long comment on your blog the other day about layout and moving pictures on Blogger - then the wretched thing wouldn't 'stick' - our internet sort of flickers on and off. I'll have another bash.

Thanks Luis. Glad you like the Portland Bill photo. For most of the year it is bleak but so many people visit in summer, there is a coach park. It is an unusual and spectacular place.

An antique crane to launch a boat? Lovely shore line.

Hello Taken for Granted. I don't know why the photo of the boat and the crane at Portland Bill re-posted itself. I'm sending it back to April 2011 which is when it was taken. As for the crane - I don't know how often these cranes on Portland are used but there are several. Your question makes me wonder whether they are ever used. But why leave a boat there otherwise?
